The End of Excel Tax Filing: KRA Unveils Web-Based System for 2027
The days of wrestling with complex Excel spreadsheets to file your taxes could soon be over. The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced plans to phase out its long-standing Excel-based income tax return system and replace it with a modern, web-based platform.
This significant shift is part of broader reforms introduced under the Finance Act, 2026, and is expected to roll out in 2027. The move is designed to make tax filing simpler, faster, and more efficient for millions of Kenyans.
What’s Changing?
1. Web-Based Filing
The new system will allow taxpayers to file returns directly through an internet browser, eliminating the need to download and complete Excel spreadsheets. This is a major shift from the current process, which has often been described as time-consuming and frustrating.
2. Staggered Filing Deadlines
To ease congestion on the iTax system, KRA has introduced staggered filing deadlines. Under the new calendar:
New Tax Filing Deadlines Starting January 2027
These revised dates will first apply to returns for the 2026 year of income, which will be filed in 2027.
3. Pre-Filled Returns
Starting January 2027, KRA intends to send every registered taxpayer a detailed pre-filled breakdown of their returns. This data will be pulled from eTIMS invoices, withholding tax certificates, and third-party sources. This means less manual entry and fewer errors.
4. WhatsApp Filing & AI Assistant
KRA is also expanding its digital services. Taxpayers can now file a wider range of returns through WhatsApp, a service introduced in April 2026. The authority's AI-powered virtual assistant, Shuru, is also being enhanced to support more tax services.
