KRA AMNESTY UPDATE | 2026

Greetings

Good news from KRA – they have officially re-introduced the Tax Amnesty program under the Finance Act 2026 with the following details:

📅 WINDOW

Open from 1st July 2026 and closes strictly on 31st December 2026.

REPRIEVES/PARDONS

For tax debts accrued up to 31st December 2025, KRA grants a 100% Waiver on:

1. ✅ Penalties

2. ✅ Interest

3. ✅ Fines

Penalties arise from late filing or late payment of taxes; interest accrues daily on any unpaid principal tax after the due date; and fines are levied for specific compliance breaches such as incorrect returns or failure to register for tax obligations, which includes VAT, PAYE, corporate tax, etc.

KEY THINGS TO NOTE:

• If you pay your principal tax or have already paid it, the penalties will be written off automatically.

• If you have pending returns with no tax due (Nil returns etc.), filing them now waives late penalties.

• You can pay the principal tax in full OR apply for a payment plan on iTax—but the principal tax must be cleared by December 2026 in order to enjoy the amnesty.

⚠️ IMPORTANT

Debts from 2026 onwards are NOT covered. This is only for pre-2026 balances.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOUR BUSINESS

For many business owners, outstanding tax penalties and interest have been a lingering burden – often arising from cash flow challenges, late filings, or genuine oversight.

This amnesty provides a rare opportunity to clear historical tax debt without the added weight of penalties and interest that may have accumulated over time.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW

1. Log in to the KRA iTax Portal – check your outstanding tax position.

2. File all outstanding returns – even if you cannot pay immediately, filing is the first step.

3. Review your eligibility – determine whether you qualify for automatic relief or need to apply for a structured plan.

4. Seek professional advice –If you are unsure about your tax position, or have ongoing disputes, consult a tax advisor. Our Audit Services can help you prepare for KRA compliance and ADR processes.
